Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were the subject of a highly anticipated, tell-all interview with talkshow superstar Oprah. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex spoke in a heartfelt way about their struggles over the last year or so, and really shone a light on some issues plaguing the Royal Family. The Duchess opened up about her mental health struggles, admitting she had experienced suicidal thoughts, and some truly harrowing racial remarks allegedly said about a baby Archie.
But while the interview was undoubtedly fascinating and brought to light some completely unknown information, it was a harrowing watch for any fan of Prince Harry, Meghan Markle or the Royal Family.
Harry joined Meghan towards the end of the talk, where he added his two cents into the situation.
The Duke agreed with everything said by his wife, and even spoke about his relationship with his own family, revealing Prince Charles had initially refused to take his calls when news of the move emerged.
Prince Harry has undoubtedly gone through a rough time, and this was made all the more apparent during the two-hour sit-down with Oprah.
Speaking to Express.co.uk, energy insights reader Alison Ward reiterated this about the Duke.
Ms Ward said it was inevitable Prince Harry would eventually make the move, and this was propelled by meeting the fiercely independent Meghan.
She said: “Harry was always going to break free. He is Diana’s son who still feels the grief and trauma of her death.
“He has an axe to grind with the British press, and this interview with an American TV show was his battle cry.”
The Duke said he also felt “trapped” while he was living as a full time working member of the family.
He revealed it was only through meeting Meghan that he was able to escape his old life and see things clearly.
Harry told Oprah: “I myself was trapped. I didn’t see a way out. I was trapped but I didn’t know I was trapped.”
The interviewer refuted his claims, asking how could he have felt trapped within a life of wealth and privilege, to which he responded he was “trapped within the system, like the rest of my family are”.
He added: “My father and my brother, they are trapped. They don’t get to leave.”
Asked if Meghan had “saved” him, Harry replied: “Yes, without question. There was a bigger purpose, there was other forces at play, I think through this whole process.”
The interview was an uncomfortable watch for those on both sides of the Harry and Meghan debate, but one thing everyone can take away from the historic appearance is – there are always two sides to every story.
