President Joe Biden‘s domestic policy advisor Susan Rice has been burning sage in her new West Wing office previously occupied by hardline Trump immigration advisor Stephen Miller.

And Rice, a lightning rod for conservative critics during the Obama Administration, appeared to confirm the symbolism of the act by retweeting an image of her office following a brief mention in a New York Times story about her.

The pictures shows a brightly colored Haitian painting. In the foreground is a round table with a bowl of burning incense. The picture also features a lone feather.

The Times had reported on the new role being carried out by Rice, who previously served as Obama’s National Security Advisor. She had been considered as a possible candidate to be Biden’s Vice President, but her selection would have been certain to provoke attacks from Republicans in Congress – who went after her in the past for her statements about the attack on the U.S. Benghazi compound.

The office she now occupies was last held by Miller, who was a powerful force in shaping the Trump administration’s crackdown on immigration who drafted Trump’s hardline ‘America first’ speeches that railed against China and undocumented immigrants.

He also helped drive the Trump administration’s ‘zero tolerance’ policy at the border, and became identified with its child separation policy that has left the succeeding administration struggling to reunite hundreds of families.

Native Americans have for years used sage in cleaning rituals as well as in general practices meant to promote healing and wisdom.

Rice’s new role has her spearheading policies that range from health policies meant to temper the coronavirus to plans to bring back the national economy.

She wasn’t involved in Biden’s first decision to use military force as president, giving her distance from a move that drew criticism from some top Republicans as well as congressional Democrats who said they weren’t consulted in advance.

‘I kind of wish I had been in the room just to hear all the considerations,” she told the paper in Zoom interview where she wore yoga pants and a fleece. ‘But I’ve got more to do than I’ve got hours of the day. It’s new terrain, so it’s fun,’ she said.
